In the world of dance, we learn early on that movement is powerful. It tells stories, heals wounds, and connects us beyond words. But behind every countdown and hip-shake lies something just as vital as technique: community

For us—people bonded through rhythm, sweat, and shared passion—community is more than just a group of people. It’s a sanctuary. A safe space of like-minded people. A sisterhood/brotherhood. A source of strength that elevates not only our performance but our mental health.

I know I have personally experienced transformative moments where just being in community has turned my entire life around. From professional goals, to navigating family, to discovering identity, being in community has directly eased my anxiety and nurtured my depression just by a simple presence of those who share similar passions.Several women are connecting outside of a divadance class, one of the best ways to get more involved and build connections

The Science Behind Connection

Research shows that belonging to a supportive community can dramatically improve our mental health and well-being. It reduces feelings of loneliness, anxiety, and depression while increasing happiness, resilience, and even life expectancy. In other words, connection isn’t just comforting—it’s essential to thrive.

When we feel seen, heard, and valued, our brains release feel-good chemicals like oxytocin and serotonin. These are the same chemicals we get from dancing! So when we combine the joy of movement with the support of our community-in-dance, we’re giving our mental health a beautiful boost.

Why Community Matters

In the many spaces of our lives, we often think about the isolated tasks to achieve while forgetting the impact of collective efforts.  The most successful, long-lasting, and healthiest people and spaces understand that community is a secret strength. Here is how it shows up in our dance community:

  • We lift each other up—not literally, but emotionally. From the moment that we see someone walking in with the residue of a tough day, being greeted and affirmed by someone who gets it can make all the difference.
  • We grow together. From mastering a new routine to navigating personal challenges, we thrive when we support one another. This growth (both in routine and in life challenges) strengthens the brain over time to create happier neuropaths while bonding with your companion.
  • We create safe spaces. Spaces to laugh, to cry, to mess up, and to rise again. Spaces where vulnerability is met with compassion, not judgment. This is more therapeutic than we can ever imagine.

Mental Health is a Team Sport

Mental health isn’t a solo act—it’s a team effort. Just like we count on each other to perform our best, we can also count on each other when life feels out of step.

  • Check in. A simple “How are you really doing?” can be a lifeline.
  • Celebrate each other. Progress isn’t about being perfect. Celebrate small wins, mental breakthroughs, and moments of courage.
  • Reach out. If you’re struggling, know that your community is here to hold space for you—without shame, without pressure.

The power of community can strike against most obstacles in our lives. Therefore, as we continue to thrive in our diverse spaces of life, navigate in such a way that recognizes and uplifts being part of something bigger than ourselves. So let’s keep showing up for others, while allowing yourself the space to be shown up for. We deserve it. Let’s be the kind of community that empowers, uplifts, and transforms.

Mental health isn’t a one-size-fits-all situation—and medication is not a dirty word.
